Paper vs. Computer

Friday, March 27th, 2009

I’m still having a little trouble writing, even blogging, but since the pdoc added another med to my cocktail, I’m feeling better. Still, it’s tough even to just freewrite. Insane, huh?

Weird how it’s easy for me to write blog posts on the computer, but when I write first drafts or sketches of scenes, dialogue, whatever, it’s always been easier and more comforting for me to write on actual paper.

Willis Tower, Overpriced Meters: What the HELL is Happening to this City?

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

First of all, what’s all this crap about changing the name of the Sears Tower to the “Willis Tower” or whatever the fuck the new owners want to change it to? Pfft. That’s like renaming Wrigley Field, know what I’m saying?

And get this — the other day Brian and I had lunch in The Neighborhood, where a quarter gets you an hour at a parking meter. Imagine our surprise when we discovered that now, an hour costs 4 quarters! WTF. It’s even more expensive in other neighborhoods. Christ. Apparently, Da Mayor leased the meters to some company for the next 75 years. You read right: 75 years, and I’m not shitting you. Oh, but get this — parking ticket fines still go to the City!

I’m not even going to go into how bad the streets are with some serious potholes from this past winter, and that it seems like nothing’s being done about them. Or any time soon, at least. Bad enough the City took forever plowing the snow.

You know what’s happening to this City? I’ll tell you what’s happening: it’s going to be the end of the Daley Dynasty, that’s what.

Resurrecting the bloggo, Part 2

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

I’ve been wanting to blog. I’ve been dying to blog. But in a previous incarnation of WP, my blog was hacked by idiot spammers who managed to worm their way into posts whose comments had been closed for years and years.

Thanks to a tech friend of mine, most of what could be fixed is fixed and I’ve moved to a different Web host. I know there’s still tweaking to be done. If I thought my categories needed an overhaul before, well, I’m in real trouble now. Some of the categories are listed twice! I can’t get my old Archives and Categories pages to display what they should and have no idea why or how.

Commenters’ Gravatars are supposed to show up, but they don’t, or at least they don’t on the old posts and when I wrote a test post along with a test comment. That plugin is now built in to this version of WP and I even set up the default picture to display if someone doesn’t have a Gravatar. But what-the-fuck-ever. Oh, and I have to redo all my old Ubernyms, you know, the plugin that explains stuff, specifically for new readers, like who Hopper is, etc., except now I’m using one called Acronyms.

I realize part of this is because of the server move, but still — WP changes so fast it’s like, if you turn your head, just for a moment, you’re left behind. Fuckers.
