Barb and the Turtles returned to the ice on Thursday, May 17, facing off against More Cowbell in an Evanston Tigers Spring Mixer game. More Cowbell has been one of the top two teams in the league all season, and they lived up to that ranking in this game, winning 5 – 0.

It was a difficult start to the game for Barb, as she gave up four goals in the first period — although one was a deflection off her own teammate, and two others were on breakaways by two of More Cowbell’s top players — including the “Superstar” (don’t know her name), who may be the league’s top player, and is probably its leading scorer (since she doesn’t pass the puck very much, hence the not-so-complimentary nickname).

After that rough start, though, Barb settled in, playing a strong second period — allowing only one goal — and scoring a shutout in the third period. Included in that period was a great blocker (the pad on Barb’s right arm) save, captured in the three-photo series above.

Barb returned to the ice last night with a rematch against More Cowbell — only this time, she played for Pink Floyd, her other team. Stay tuned!

Brian’s Goalie Summary

First Period: First goal was on a shot by Superstar from Barb’s glove (left) side to her stick (right) side: it was accidentally deflected by one of the Turtles’ defensewomen and went in; otherwise, it would not have been on net. Goal 2 was on a breakaway: the More Cowbell forward skated from Barb’s glove to stick side, and then shot back to Barb’s glove side, catching Barb moving in the wrong direction. Goal 3 was scored off a shot near the blue line: Barb appeared to be screened, and the shot went in off the stick-side post. Goal 4 was scored by Superstar on a breakaway: she skated at Barb with good pace — glove side — waited until Barb went down, and then scored, stick side.

Second Period: Barb allowed one goal this period, when she went down to block a shot. The puck was either deflected by a teammate (and went over Barb) or she did not drop down quickly enough (allowing the goal to go through).

Third Period: Shutout period!

Final Score: More Cowbell 5, The Turtles 0

  3. OMG! I love that sequence of photos! Sounds like a tough beginning to the game, but nice job keeping them away in the 2nd and 3rd periods.

  4. It was bad, but not as bad as when we played against Burnt Orange or rather, the Sweet Potatas (Week 4: The Turtles vs. the Sweet Potatas).

Just wait ’til the next game post from this past Thursday, when I had a rematch with Teal/More Cowbell, but with my other team!
