Barb was back in action last Thursday (May 11th) as her “other” Spring Mixer team, Pink Floyd, took on the Blue Angels. Once again, Barb played well, although it wasn’t reflected in the final score, with the Blue Angels winning, 4 – 1. However, Barb stopped 22 out of 26 shots, including a number of breakaways and strong scoring chances by the Angels, and did a nice job of keeping her team close — only allowing the fourth goal late in the third period.
One thing that Barb did well — and that is captured in the photo above — is stay square to the puck, thus blocking the shot and maintaining control of the rebound (keeping the Blue Angels from having another opportunity to score). The head coach at Barb’s goalie clinic refers to this move as “Spongebob Squarepants,” where the goalie keeps her body as square as Spongebob’s. Since neither Barb nor I have watched Spongebob, that analogy was lost on us at first — although it did provide a great opportunity for a “punny” title to the photo. Maybe those of you with kids at home will get this…
I’ll post an update of Barb’s last game — from this past Thursday, the 18th — on Wednesday; including photos (with Paint Shop Pro enhancement!) of a great save Barb made with her blocker. Stats and a scoring summary from this game are below.
Brian’s Goalie Summary
First Period: First goal was on a shot from Barb’s stick (right) side that went in on her glove (left) side. Barb was in pretty good position, but it was a good shot. Second goal was again from the stick side, this one through the 5-hole (between Barb’s legs), as she went down a split-second too late to make the save
Second Period: Barb allowed one goal this period, and it occurred when her team was trying to change lines (all the skaters leaving the ice, to be replaced by a second unit). The Blue Angels intercepted the puck as this change was taking place and beat the Pink Floyd skaters down the ice, leaving Barb alone. The Angels then made a nice pass, from Barb’s glove side to her stick side, and scored a goal as she was moving from one side of the crease to the other.
Third Period: Barb nearly got a shutout this period, but the Angels best player got behind the Pink skaters on a breakaway and scored. Barb had stopped her on a breakaway earlier — and tried to make an athletic, scrambling save on this play — but the Angels skater made a nice move and scored.
Final Score: Blue Angels 4, Pink Floyd 1

Ooh! Look at her being all goalie-like! Awesome! Looks like you’re really progressing!
You know what? In the series of photos you posted yesterday over at Flickr I totally saw the “spongebob squarepants” thing. Sorry that the team lost, but hooray for making 22 saves! If only your team could give you some cushion… I always feel so bad when we can’t put a darn thing in the net for our goalie.
That awesome that the game was a good game. Although not reflected in the scores
Hey, all! I’m not getting these comments in my e-mail because Brian wrote the post, but of course I’ll respond! (Though I think he should, too, since he wrote it!
) Actually, he still has last week’s game post to complete, but he can’t do that ’til I upload the pics to Flickr! I have another game tonight against the team we played last week, but this time I’ll be playing with the Pink team (last week I played with Green).
KG, thanks! I recently bought a pair of San Jose socks specifically with you in mind. Once I opened the package, I even swung them round and round over my head, hoping I’d hit someone with them.
But they don’t exactly match my green jersey! Oh, well — I still wear them. Thanks, again, for noticing my progress!
megan, when you put it that way — that I made 22 saves, it doesn’t sound so bad.
Gladys, thanks for pointing that out — I get too obsessed with the score. Still, it’d be nice to win just one game!
Send me the whys and wherefores (and costs etc) of the August tourney and I’ll talk to Rob. He’s interested in the weekend adventure it would likely be!
True enough.
Actually, I did send you the info. I sent it to someone else, too, and it ended up in her spam folder for some reason, so you might want to check there. If you don’t have it, let me know and I can resend it, or…here’s the link to the tourney page and a PDF file for the registration info:

megan, if you’re reading this, you may want to check it out. We have 10 skaters and want to cap it at 15, though some feel that’s too many. On the other hand, 10 doesn’t seem like enough. I’ll e-mail you.
