I go to the gym seven days a week. On six of those days I do a 20-minute cardio work-out and alternate days of lifting for arms and legs. On the seventh day, I do 30 minutes of cardio.
Three days a week I play hockey: one pick-up game, a practice, and a regular game. Since hockey has started (mid-September), I’ve found it difficult to keep up with my gym routine. These past couple of weeks, I’ve been tired both mentally and physically, and not a little sore, mainly after hockey practice.
I’ve heard of people working out too much, but it isn’t like I’m bench pressing 200 lbs. or anything like that. Still, I wonder if I should cut down on going to the gym, at least during hockey season. I’m 37, after all, not 27.

It all depends on your goal and since I am here via blogexplosion I am a “first time listener/first time caller” and don’t know your goals.
But if you are just after weight loss, you should be ok. But if you are trying to 1) increase performance or 2) build muscles, I have learned that you must have a blend of easy days, endurance days, intense days and rest days. I am not a trainer. I am just a former sprint triathlete and now I am training in martial arts. It’s just what I’ve read and what works for me!
Hi, Chris. I’m doing a bit of all three, actually, but since I need more bulk while I’m playing hockey, weight due to muscle mass is more important to me than burning fat. I also need the cardio endurance, but I think the blend you describe is probably a good thing.
I used to train in martial arts and absolutely loved it! Maybe I’ll be able to get back to that one day. Thanks for your input.
Barb, you don’t even look like you’re 37. Age ain’t nuthin’ but a number. On the other hand, there’s nothing wrong with taking a break every once in a while.
Gosh, you’re like sooo old. I KEED! I KEEED!
Anyway, just listen to your body. If it feels like you’re overdoing it, step back a little from it. Don’t obsess over it, k?
As much as we like to push ourselves sometimes, I agree with KG, you should listen to your body. It does need time to rest and recover, otherwise you’ll exhaust yourself.
That being said, I’m impressed! My goal is to make it to the gym 4 times a week, but I’m luck if I get 3.
Good gawd woman, I’m tired just reading about it all. I do however think that 7 days is a bit over doing it. I think 3-4 would be more manageable and more productive
Phew… crap girl! Stop talking like that… You are exhausting me…!!!
LOL, I’m with Delite on the ‘being tired from reading’. Barb, I think you should do as much as you enjoy. When it feels like it’s a job, then cut back. Your age doesn’t mean anything.
You’re all right–37 is just a number. I think because I had that colonoscopy thing at a younger age than most people do, it’s made me feel more vulnerable somehow. Anyway, here’s what I decided with Brian’s help: go to the gym on Sunday through Thursday and do my usual routine except on Tuesdays, which is when I’ll just do cardio. That way, I can get to the rink faster for my pick-up game.
On Fridays and Saturdays I’ll just do mat pilates at home, which, although it isn’t cardio-intense, is good for stretching, which I’ll need before/after hockey games.
