Colonoscopy Diagnosis

The procedure went fine, and unlike some people told me about their own experiences, I was WIDE AWAKE and not under general anesthesia. They did have me on a sedative, but not in la-la land so the doctor could communicate with me throughout this process.

What surprised me was that when the tech brought me into the room to change out of my clothes, I started bawling because I was so scared–tears, sobs, the works. I’ve had all kinds of other medical procedures done, but for some reason this one just terrified me.

Thankfully, there is nothing seriously wrong. I have a teeny, tiny diverticulum that the doctor said is nothing to worry about. Basically, it’s a pocket inside your colon, kind of like a dent. Don’t worry–I won’t gross anyone out further by posting the pictures of my insides! Bwahahahaha!!!!

I also have a few internal hemorrhoids, and that’s what’s been causing the blood. He says that most people have these, and sometimes they just become irritated. Maybe i’ve been spending too much time sitting on my ass in front of the computer. Heh.

So I’m supposed to continue my high fiber diet and daily Metamucil, and eat four small meals a day. Wonderful. I’ve learned recently that the more active you are, the more food you need!

I’m also supposed to do these pelvic exercises. You know how you push when you poop? Well, for the exercises I’m supposed to do the opposite–you know, like you’re trying to hold it in. I have to do ten of these three times a day. Just what I need–something else to add to my daily workout routine. Brian says that once I’ve done these exercises long enough, I should be able to crack nuts with my ass. Heh. The Flying Squirrels better keep that in mind next time we play them. ;)

  5. Ohhh…you were bleeding and didn’t know why? Is that why you originally went? That is SO SCARY, Barb! I’m glad it turned out well for you..as well as it could have. Do your exercises and keep eating lots of fiber! :-)

  6. good to hear it wasn’t serious. take care of yourself, do the exercises and try to get out more often. i find myself sitting in front of the computer more often recently, probably because i’m self employed. every night i tell my swain, we are going to walk tomorrow and that rarely happens. sigh.

  7. Hi, Anonymous. Well, there was a little more to it than just that, but it was the deciding factor of getting the colonoscopy. I’m still looking for tasty things to eat that are high in fiber, but I’ve started doing the exercises and cutting down on the foods I shouldn’t eat.

kim, thank God, eh? I was so scared because three family members (including my mom) have had them, but they were all over 50, when it’s more “normal” to have this done. I’m 37. I guess that’s why I was so upset right beforehand. Fortunately, I’ve been getting out a lot, but I still think I need to cut down on my computer time. :)
