Treadmill Virgin

/

It’s been a just over a month since I last posted my weight chart (click to enlarge), and part of the reason is because I couldn’t get myself to go to the gym for like, a couple weeks, which is where I weigh myself, so for part of the time it looks like my weight hadn’t changed at all.

My lowest so far is 134 lbs., but that was taken on the PCP’s office scale with my clothes on, so to me it doesn’t really count. My lowest and current weight is 134.4, and I haven’t even had a BM today! Haha. Also, I started taking the Pill about three weeks ago, so I’m sure that has something to do with the normal fluctuations.

Speaking of BMs (sorry), yeah, the Metamucil helps. It’s not too bad when you get used to it. I drink one to two bottles of Metamucil water a day.

Anyway, for the first time today I tried the treadmill at the gym instead of the elliptical, which is what Brian and I usually use for cardio. I don’t like treadmills because the few times I’ve been on one, I was convinced that I’d fall flat on my face. I still feel this way, but apparently treadmills have improved over the years, so it wasn’t too bad.

The whole reason we tried this is because of my knees–like, the joints, really–have been bothering me for the past couple of days. Years ago, when I used to jog/run (not often), I’d do it anyway even though it hurt my knees and shins. Surprisingly, the treadmill was easier on my knees than the elliptical, so we’ll probably use those from now on. So now I just have to recalculate my pace for a 20-minute workout because the treadmill measures all of that differently. Right now it seems that I can go at 4.5 mph for at least ten minutes before stepping up my pace.

Back to the knee thing. I’m concerned, obviously, because I don’t want it to affect hockey. On the other hand, I played a pick-up game on Tuesday and went to practice both Thursday and last night. My team only practices once a week, but I was invited to the Blue team practice. (On Thursday night practices, two squads normally share the ice, but the White team had a game that night.) So perhaps I’m doing too much, at least this week.

Well, gotta go. I have a game in just over an hour.

  1. Woo! Good luck on the treadmill. I’m still scared of them. LOL

Hope you did well in your game. :)

I share your fear of treadmills. I have one & have lost my balance SO many times, I’ve lost count. Are you wanting to get to 115? That seems too small for you, especially if you’re playing hockey. Plus, you don’t look fat as you are.
Do they have hockey leagues all yearlong?

  3. I dont like treadmills as well. I usually prefer the ski runner or something since i find it heaps of fun.

KG, I think you probably had a better time at the Sharks game. Actually, they say I did well even though we got our asses handed to us.

jane, I’m trying to get to 120 (i’m 5’1″). you’re right–115 would be way too small for hockey. In fact, I used to have to bulk up before the season would start.

charles, I’ve never even heard of a ski runner!

I love the treadmill, but I’m a runner, so I love running, period. :) If the elliptical is bothering your knees, have you tried varying the incline and tension? Some of the incline levels, especially combined with high tension, can be tough on the knees, but in general, because the elliptical is non-impact, it is easier on the joints than some other forms on exercise (like running).

  6. Barb says:

Caylynn, I only mess with the crossramp, which I believe is the part where you choose which muscle groups you want to work on: I always pick the one that works your gluts, quads, hamstrings, and calves. I never change the incline, so as far as I know, everything else is set to “default.”

I’m surprised to hear that the elliptical is easier on the joints. I used the treadmill for the third day in a row today and the impact on my knees wasn’t bad at all. However, I’ve noticed that it works my calves a lot more than the other muscle groups and than the elliptical did. I like it better, though, because it’s a lot easier to control your pace.

I am kind of scared of treadmills myself.. but still use them! I just usually hold on.. Especially when I start to go anywhere above 6.5mph, I feel like I need to really hold on or i’ll fall. Like I can’t keep up. It is interesting that the treadmill would be easier on your knees… I thought elliptical is lower impact than treadmill or running in general? I always feel like I get a better work out out of the treadmill though.

  8. Barb says:

Wow! 6.5 mph! I’ve found that I have to hold on when I’m going slower and let go as I speed up!

I honestly don’t know which machine is better on the joints, but to me the treadmill seems lower impact–not that I think it’s less of a workout, but it’s easier then having to pump/pedal your legs and move your arms at the same time, though I use the ones that only work your legs. Anyway, I’m really growing to like the treadmill much better than the elliptical.
