Friday Cat Blogging No. 28: Indoor Cat

Angelo Wants OutAngelo goes through phases of dashing out the front door at the most inconvenient times: when there’s a delivery guy with our food; when we’re running late. fortunately, our door opens to a hallway rather than the outside, and usually he runs up the stairs rather than down towards the lobby.

i can’t tell you how many times i’ve given him the “Indoor Cat” lecture. after I’ve picked him up from in front of the neighbors’ doors where he’s sniffing their shoes, i stand in the hall just outside our door and explain, “This is outdoors.” then i carry him just past the threshold and remind him, “This is indoors. You are an indoor cat.”

yet, he’s figured out how to communicate to us that he wants out. he stands by the door and alternately cries and rubs his head against the door frame. we never give in, so i don’t know why he continues to do this.

i’m an advocate of keeping cats indoors, where they’re safest–and where people remain safe, as well, if your cat is anything like Lewis “The Terrorist of Sunset Circle” Cisero.

more pet pics are available for your viewing pleasure at this week?s Friday Ark. if you post your own pets? photos, leave them a trackback or comment and you?ll be listed there, too. :)

  1. My cat has been running out the door after like 3 years of her not intrested in the outside. She usually just runs out and stands right by the front of the door so I can just pick her up and bring her back in. Yes, it is much safer for cats to be indoors. If she ever got lose I would worry half to death.

One of my old cats got lose and came home a week later pregnant :-/ I WAS an irresponsible pet owner and now I know they need to be fixed!!! Too many homless lovable kitties and doggies in the world.

  4. Our cats run out the door whenever they get the chance…they’ve been doing it more since Spring arrived.

  5. That photo of your cat “rubbing his head” doesn’t look like what it is.It’s more like banging his head onto the wall. Interesting feline body language. Hehehe.

  9. One of our cats likes to edge toward the front door. We were worried he was going to do the whole taking off thing (and large urban areas are not cool for letting cats roam, imho).

Anyway, I gave up and took him outside myself. He clawed me to pieces to get away and back inside.

He doesn’t go near the door anymore.

    Cats.

  12. Cute kitty you got there! Our cats are indoor too. They don’t try to get out. The oldest one went outside one time and panicked. He ran under the porch and remained there paralyzed with fear and has since not tried to get out. They’re afraid of the outside world for some reason.

  13. My cat, Turbo, has never been outside except the one time that some inhuman asshole threw him out of a car window when he was about 6 weeks old. After that, my friend got him and took him to the vet. Luckily he was ok…just a little hungry. She told me about him, and I went to “look” at him and fell in love. That was the last time he was outside. That was 11 years ago. He has perches all over the house where he can see outside and sometimes I will take him out and sit on the porch with him…but I never put him down.
