Words, Words, Words

thanks to Cat, i am now addicted to Yahoo! Widgets. being the geek that i am, i downloaded one called Word of the Day. today’s word is uxorious, which means:

excessively fond of or submissive to a wife

i searched for the etymology here, and learned that uxor is Latin for “wife.”

certainly Brian is “excessively fond of” me–i’m his wife, after all, but i wouldn’t describe him as “submissive.”

what a poor, confused word. its own definition has 2 contrasting connotations–1 positive, and 1 negative. i’m no mathlete, but doesn’t that mean then, that the word “uxorious” cancels itself out?

  1. WordPress hit me over the head and told me you linked over…thanks!

    *rubs head*

Interesting word. Isn’t there another word for it though? Like cat whipped…or pussy cat…or whipped cream? Anyhow…I know there is a word in there somewhere I’ve heard.

I know guys like this. I’ll have to make note of the word so I can use it where others won’t know what it means — then I can explain it!

  3. I’m not too fond of Yahoo! due to their aiding of the Red Chinese government in the persecution and prosecution of dissidents and intellectuals, but you can get the same material (yes, even the word uxorious) by going to http://dictionary.reference.com/wordoftheday/

Uxorilocal is a word I learned in college: it means that the husband goes to live with the wife’s family.

Personally, I think you should just go off on your own.

  9. I reference them on my site. Basically, KentuckyGurl, it’s things kinda like the clocks you see on blogs or the weather pixies, but on your desktop where they belong :)

You can also load RSS feeds, News feeds from Yahoo and CNN and other sites, streaming music players (they are all designed differently), clocks, toolbars, etc.

They are designed by individuals and placed at http://widget.yahoo.com for public use.

WARNING: They are addictive! Even for those that do not like clutter on their desktop - ADDICTIVE!

  12. Cat, the term is “pussy whipped.”

pantheranon, another reason why i love you. ~swoon~

Joel, in some cultures, like my own, it’s common for a newly married couple to live with one or the other set of parents. that doesn’t happen so much with Fil-Am families anymore

i must decline the meme. :)

dan, based on this dictionary, i think it would be maritusorious. sounds like a dinosaur to me. no, that would be maritusaurus. a dinosaur husband?

BJ, if you can get away with it! ;)

KG, see Cat’s second comment. it was moderated because of the link.

Margaret, if you can remember how to spell it and are stuck with a bunch of vowels!

emz, good one! ako Pinay, pero yung asawa ko Amerikano. sorry if my spelling and grammar are off. lol
