Listal

months ago i began entering my Star Wars books into LibraryThing, which i thought was a great place to keep track of my Star Wars library. (read my post on LibraryThing here.)

Listal is even better. it allows you to catalog your music, DVDs, and games–not just your books. further, a free account doesn’t limit you to entering only 200 books (if you want to enter more than 200 in LibraryThing you have to pay $10/year or $25 for a lifetime membership).

other features include:

  • the ability to track which of your items you’ve loaned out
  • customized lists in which you can group items
  • books that are read or unread
  • items what you want

you can also join discussion groups for people with similar interests. i’ve created a group called Star Wars – Expanded Universe. so sign up (did i mention it’s free?), start listing your stuff, and join my group. :D you can see my Listal profile here.

Thats a cool idea. I think I may use it for my parents dvds. They always have me type out a list.

  2. jane says:

How you can figure all this stuff out is beyond me! I think you’re just a plain ol genius!

  3. dan says:

Oooo. Now I can convert my own list to somewhere else. I have more than 200 DVDs let alone books so Library Thing was never a good option for me!

For a year or two, I’ve been tracking my DVD and game collections in a custom database for SmartList for PalmOS. My solution lacks any community elements, but has the major advantage of portability. No more do I stand in the store and think, “Did I buy The Truman Show on DVD, or do I still only have my VHS copy?”

I’d be happy to share my database if any SmartList/Palm users want it.

There’s always someone who comes up with something better, isn’t there? Yay for competition.
Thanks for the new find, Barb!

  6. Jim says:

The mere fact that you have a collection of Star Wars books to enter into a database is totally kick a$$! Rock on (and of course May the Force be with you!)

  7. Joel says:

Is this thing online? I would rather keep it to myself then. You never know what Homeland Security will take offense with.

  8. barb says:

Marie, dan, and Joefish, i saw that you can import titles from some other software (?) so it could be really easy to get your info online. not sure, though, because i have to enter mine in one at a time.

dan, don’t forget that you can catalog your games on there, too!

Joefish, we aren’t so technologically advanced in this household that we have any portability. :P

jane, i found this particular site about a month ago through 43 Things, but at the time it was more like a project manager. they’ve just released this version, and it’s much better!

Margaret, i’m just glad i never finished entering all of my books into LT!

    Jim, yeah, i rawk, don’t i? heehee.

Joel, i don’t know that i’d actually get around to entering more than just my Star Wars books, so unless Homeland Security prefers Star Trek, i think i’ll be ok. ;)

    r-tty, it’s totally cool!

Oh my goodness! I am a crazy organizer, I love to organize…this, my dear, is a dream! thanks for the info!

  10. Mr. Fabulous says:

So…do you like Star Wars? LOL

  11. Joefish says:

Ah, well, just thought I’d offer. :)

  12. barb says:

    Deb, you will love this!

Mr. Fabulous, welcome! how would you ever have guessed that i like Star Wars?

    Joefish, i know–i was just kidding. ;)

Lucky for me my boyfriend built me a program to categorize my music, movies etc. I put everything in a few years ago, but I know I can really be unnecessarily anal about rather important things in the grand scheme of things.

Socialogue is an up-and-coming site working on the same features as Listal with a different slant. They also let you import your iTunes music library. It’s at least worth a look.
