So Over TypePad

today they sent me an e-mail about something having to do with my CNAME–huh? i called Network Solutions, with whom my domain name is registered and they said that everything’s fine. and yet TypePad wants to go over this with me. why? i have no idea how these things work, and if Network Solutions says it’s working, then shouldn’t it be?

i’m so tempted to switch to a company that will both contain my domain name as well as a blogging platform for me use, mainly WordPress. they have so many more templates available than for TypePad, and are much beautiful besides. another thing i like about WordPress is the ability to have password protected entries (as opposed to an entire blog), and the ability for commenters to be notified when someone (other than me) has replied to their comment thus creating a dialogue that actually makes it a blogging community! imagine that. very much like what i liked about LiveJournal, which ironically TypePad owns!

what to do? what to do? dishing out the yearly fee might make things tight, but on the other hand, we won’t have to worry about making any more monthly payments. any thoughts, people? this could be the new poll!

  1. I used typepad for a long time and paid for it. I had nothing but frustration all the time. So, I found blogger and a few other places that gave me the same freedoms that typepad did but for FREE.

Look into a few of these Barb.

  3. Dariana: i actually started out using LJ, and do have a bloggo chicago LJ, but it’s friends only. it seems that fewer people are likely to create an LJ account than they are to create Blogger.

then, i began using Blogger, but it didn’t have the types of features that TypePad has, so i only use it for pre-bloggo. i’ve got a Mindsay blog–only so i can comment on Ratty’s! and the same with Xanga.

i’ve heard nothing but good things with WordPress, though, which seems to have everything i want, including comments RSS for people who want to know when they’re comments have been replied to, and a number of gorgeous pre-made templates. we’ll see, we’ll see.

TypePad is supposed to reveal all of these new features by the end of the year. again, we’ll see.

  4. Barb, if you ended up getting your own server, shit, I’d custom design your site and do all the damn work for you for FREE. How about THAT for a deal. I’m so bummed out by how you feel, that I want to do something to help you out. I’m serious.

  5. i had a wordpress blog…i think? lol i’m not very good with knowing what i’m using…but it was over at blogsome.com - i had no complaints except that it had google ads, apart from that it was luuuush (obviously though if you’re paying you won’t have to worry). The templates were nice and eveything was smooth =)

  6. April and ratty: that’s exactly what i’m talking about. and if it’s on my own server, i don’t need to worry about the Google ads. the problem right now is coming up for the annual fee. i’m thinking by the end of this year.

  7. The only advice I can give is to just find something that’s easy for you to use. Anything that creates less hassles is tops… part of blogging is sharing joy… which can’t be shared if you’re too busy pulling your hair out and screaming…

And I wanted to quick comment too on the birth certificate… my parents gave me mine at 18 and thank goodness I kept it. Even within the US it can take weeks or months to get a copy, and you pay through the nose for the privilege. You’d think they’d want a copy of your Social Security docs like your card or your citizenship stuff. You might try contacting the person they assigned to you and explaining your dilemma… sometimes they will take other things in lieu. Good Luck!

  8. Good topic. I’m going to be changing from blogger to something else in Jan. or Feb. & typepad was 1 I was considering. But now maybe I won’t. I’ll have to check WordPress out.

I love, love, love the new look!!

  10. I use Typepad, and I’ve been pretty satisfied, but that’s just me. I wonder what their problem is with your CNAME? Here’s a guess, though: I have another Typepad blog: humanechicago.com (which I’ve been sorely neglecting!), and I have my own domain name (humanechicago.com) mapped to the Typepad site. The humanechicago.com URL domain will take you to the site, but when you actually get to the site, the *Typepad* URL shows in the address field: http://jump.typepad.com/humanechicago. I wonder if Typepad wants your Typepad URL to show in the address field once people are on your site and not the bloggochicago.com URL/domain that you own.
Sorry that was long! Does that make sense? This is just my guess as to what Typepad might have a problem with.

  11. Margaret: i’ve been pretty satisfied except for the last several months. their support has been like, “oh, look on this page to see how you do it” rather than “this is how you do it,” which is how it was before.

i think you’re correct in saying that you can type either bloggochicago.com or bloggochicago.blogs.com to get to my blog. but they’re talking about some type of A record. ???
