Chicago Living Tip No. 33

contrary to a widely held belief, there is no City law stating that you can reserve the street parking spot from which you toiled to dig your snowbound car by placing 2 old kitchen chairs with each end of a broom set on the seats.

  1. I’ve always wanted–but so far have not had the courage–to move all those chairs off of the streets surrounding my house–not to park in them myself, but to let others park there (and, presumably, suffer the wrath of the chair owners). I’d like to put them all in one big pile on someone’s front lawn. Afraid of getting shot, though.

  2. You’re kidding! You should post a picture of that…I’ve never seen it. (Although I completely believe it!)

  3. i wish i were kidding. i’ll try to find a picture, though it’ll probably be from one of the news sites. there isn’t any snow on the ground right now, and i’m hoping it stays that way!

  5. There may be no law but people have been shot over it. the shovelled out car spot with the folding chair marker is one of those unwritten chicago laws.

  6. I don’t mind when people block off their parking space for a couple of days after a large snow. What bothers me is when people think that’s their spot for the rest of the winter. I think the parking space-saver should only be valid as long as most of the parking spots on the street are difficult to park in. Once most of the spots have been shovelled, been driven over enough that the snowpile is reduced, or have melted, then your lawnchair shouldn’t count anymore.
