Inappropriate Elimination, Part 2
all day today i thought i smelled poop by my desk, but i couldn’t find any. still, the scent came and went, came and went.
i checked around my desk, underneath, on my chair, my pants. then i finally checked Hopper and Basil’s butts, or i tried to anyway. Hee Seop and Angelo spent the entire day in the bedroom, so i didn’t bother checking theirs.
Brian got home about 20 minutes ago. i asked him if he detected a vague smell of poop emanating from my office, and he said yes. in addition, he smelled it early this morning while i was still asleep but couldn’t find it either.
a hunt ensued, and i found it on top of a file cabinet. fortunately, it wasn’t diarrhea. perhaps it’s time to pay a visit to the scary bad lady, just to be sure Hopper’s OK health-wise.
i’m still reading the Pam Johnson-Bennett book, Cat Vs. Cat, but she doesn’t offer suggestions for dealing with pooping out of the box (that doesn’t have to do with litter box issues), which apparently, is called "middening." the only recommendations are for how to deal with urine.
on the other hand, she suggests using diversion techniques to keep the more aggressive cats from attacking before they actually pounce. keep toys hidden around the house, she says, even keep toys in your pockets.
of course i’d do anything to have a peaceful household, but man, i don’t know if i could keep up with all of that.
Cats

You mentioned in an earlier entry that your kitty was upset because you got another cat. This might have something to do with it. Too bad you don’t have Sonia Fitzpatrick… maybe she would do the trick! Lol.
But serisouly though, if you kitty is pooping outside of the litterbox, it’s because he/she does not like their living environment. As I said earlier, he/she wants to be outside or alone. At least, that’s how it’s always been at my house. Your kitty might feel threatened by the other cat. Just a suggestion. You might want to have that cat live in your room alone instead of being around the other cat. I’m not sure, because you haven’t explained all the details in your blog entry… as far as, what would be other factors that could relate to this whole situation. If it is not one factor, then perhaps it is another. It’s all a process of eliminaton. Not like you don’t know that, but… you know!

[...] i happened to look in Hopper’s direction, and she was taking a dump on the side desk. wha–? she’s pooped outside the box before (on this occasion and this other occasion among others), but never so blatantly in front of us. i mean, she was in the middle of the act when i saw her. she got a time out in the bathroom, which she’s never had before. i’m not sure how that went because Brian was the disciplinarian this time. i was frozen where i sat, in disbelief, in dismay, and absolutely mortified.
