I Moved to Minnesota and Didn’t Even Know It

yesterday i got a phone call from my podiatrist’s office to confirm my address (i broke a toe last summer). they sent me a bill that was mailed back with a letter stating that no one by my name lives at that address. according to the doctor’s files, somebody called to give them my new address–in Deerwood, Minnesota. whoever took the call didn’t record the name of the caller. they have no other patients who share my last name.

my sister-in-law and her husband live in suburban Minneapolis, but i have never lived in Minnesota nor has anyone else in my family.

this doesn’t sit well with me.

  1. My advice: PULL YOUR CREDIT REPORTS IMMEDIATELY.

I’ve never had my identity stolen, but my credit WAS fused with my mom’s credit history (same name, same middle initial). THAT was hard enough to untangle–but if someone’s working at it, that’s just messy. Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion all have websites; even though it costs $9 a pop, it’s SO worth it if you suspect your identity is being screwed with.

  3. see, that’s just it. there’s no way they can mess up my credit report more than it already is. but hey–if they want to pay off my student loans, that’s fine with me.
